How big of a tank would a single adult rock bass need? Wondering because whenever I go to my secret spot at my local river the only small fish I catch are tons of 3.5-6" rock bass and I figured if I could find room for a big enough tank that'd be the best size to catch and keep one at.

I would say a 40 or 50 because they can grow to 12 in

Depends how much you want to grow the fish, how much you plan to feed it, and how much maintenance you want to do on the tank.
Depends if your question is targeting a minimal size, optimal size, or typical size.

For a minimal number, I bet I could start with a 3" Rock Bass, and keep it indefinitely in a 20L on a CR diet. It would be unlikely for it to ever grow beyond 6" under these circumstances.

There will be some rock bass that gets bigger than 12" and its not rare.

Would a 40 breeder work or is it not long enough?

Here in PA the biggest I've caught is 9", and I've caught hundreds. There are a bunch of states where the state record is not even 12":

By my definition it's rare for a Rock Bass to reach 12".

Tank raised fish will stunt, and will not reach the same potential they would have in the wild.

We had a similar debate earlier in the year about bluegill. People on one side saying they could easily reach 12". People on the other side saying they would never get bigger than 8" in an aquarium. Both sides were right. If you keep a rock bass in a 40 gallon aquarium, he'll get to live a pretty comfortable life, but he'll never get anywhere close to 12".

In my opinion a rock bass in a 40 gallon feeder would work fine. Give it plants and a good hiding place. Might be a bit boring to watch though.

Maybe I don't know my tank sizes but the breeder tubs I had my warmouth in were not very deep (3 feet long and 18 inches wide but only a foot or so deep). I had to move him out of there after a few years. And he is much more interesting to watch as he lurks around in the deeper tank.

Here, a 12" rock bass is just avenge size and you get some 14-16" rock bass occasionally.
