Caught on the shores of Georgian bay on Lake Huron. Shallow water, about 5 feet of depth, under a fallen tree.

Just curious as to what hybridization this is. Pumpkinseed and bluegill hybrid? Northern and bluegill hybrid?

Aside from this fish I was catching bluegills.

Doesn't look like pure pumpkinseed to me.

Looking at it more closely it could be an orangespotted sunfish.

Looks like Orangespotted x bluegill hybrid or possible orangespotted x pumpkinseed hybrid that I sampled out of lakes that hold highest populations of orangespotted sunfish.

I have made crosses of all above. Looks to have bluegill in it. May be a F2 or backcrosses any or some combination of crosses listed above. Gut makes me think pumpkin in it as well but does not look like a first generation cross.

That is a very cool looking hybrid. I think it's a bluegill x pumpkinseed, at least that's what I'd write down on the data sheet if I collected it during a fish survey. :)

I haven't spent much time in the Lake Huron drainage, but I imagine the two species of Lepomis you're most likely to encounter in the lake are bluegill and pumpkinseed. So, odds are it's a combination of those two.

Some hybrid photos for comparison:
