I have noticed that white sturgeon "Acipenser transmontanus" is often for sale despite their unsuitability for even a very large aquarium due to their adult size and their need for cold water. While Shovelnose sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus platorynchus which are far more suitable for aquariums due to their small size and tolerance of warm water are seldom if ever seen for sale.

Is there any reason for this discrepancy? Both are captive bred and white sturgeon are sold west of the rocky's outside their native range.

Any thoughts on this?

Probably because they're grown primarily as food, not for the pet trade.
