I saw this sunfish at the Denver aquarium and it just looked so odd to me. Is it a hybrid? It was housed with some Texas cichlids.
Sunfish hybrid?

I believe that is a now extinct species of sunfish. It's difficult to tell what it is (was) from the picture.

It is not a good representative of any species or even hybrid. Animal appears to be in poor health exhibiting the typical health issues of keeping in aquarium where things simply are not right. If pushed I would say a little bluegill is in fish based on lower operculum coloration and something else like longear or pumpkinseen based on what appears to be faint stripes near opercular tab. Photograph simply not good enough to make a good call.

I agree with the above guesses. The fish certainly is in a state of declining health, that may or may not be attributed to husbandry factors. I have cared for some extremely geriatric Lepomis that develop signs of lordosis/scoliosis, and an overall "droopy-ness" of the fins, tail, etc. Colors fade and the fish stops eating. Regardless, that animal is no longer exhibit worthy in my opinion.

Thanks for all the input. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture. There was at least one other fish in there identical to this one. The Texas cichlids looked healthy.
