One day I upped my white LED lights to 100% from a fairly low level (45-50%). I forgot about it and left it at 100% for a while. Now I'm experiencing some algae problems. In addition to turning down the lights, I am doing frequent water changes and am watching my feeding so I don't overfeed.

But I was wondering: How effective are Florida flag fish at removing algae? Are they aggressive? I've read some unflattering things about their behavior, but an wondering what you all think.

I have six rainbow darters, eight southern redbelly dace and a small school of mixed shiners. I wouldn't want to add anything that would harm them.

Thanks!

Flagfish shouldn't bother any of the fish you listed. Not sure how they'll do on whatever type of algae you have--but I have seen them graze on aquatic vegetation. As I mentioned in another post yesterday, you might want to consider Stonerollers. They seem to be a better fit with the other stream fish you currently keep. They will certainly graze on algae. While they can get fairly sizable, they are a very peaceful, schooling species.

I kept flagfish in a planted tank years ago. I ended up feeding them to my turtle. Did not enjoy their fin nipping antics with my mollies nor did I like the way they favored new growth on my plants over algae. Just one man's biased opinion, your millage may vary.

Get some hornwort. It'll grow reasonably fast and use up nutrients needed by algae.
I grow it b y the pound in my freshwater tanks. Have to thin it regularly to see the fish. Every time I toss a handful, I'm removing food for algae. Too bad my turtles don't seem to eat it. They do clean the snails off before I throw it in the trash.

Good to know. Thanks for all of the great input! I think I'll avoid them.
