You won't be able to keep scallops, they're filter feeders that starve to death in all but the largest tanks.

Most urchins get a bit large.

Anemones will often eat gobies.

Many crabs are opportunistic and will kill small/slow/asleep fish.

For advice on what inverts could go in a small tidepool biotope, perhaps try Reefcentral.com? They'd know plenty about saltwater inverts and small aquarium-type fish.

I'll warn you, a 15g is a nano tank in saltwater, and small tanks are harder to maintain.

Change of plans, did some discussion at last night's scuba club meeting and we've decided to make our first local trip this year earlier than ever before. So, hoping allergy season won't be so bad that I can't dive, I'll be heading to Bonne Terre, Missouri towards the end of March. Hoping that all the cold weather will be gone by then so that I can easily seine in the creeks if I have time. So what kind of species can I look forward to catching here and are any good aquarium residents? Here's where it is in MO.

Unfortunately, no. I only have my permit now and neither of my parents wants to go on a 18 hour drive no matter if I'm driving or they are.

Have you thought of ride sharing? I won't volunteer anyone, but there are people comimg from Ohio, New York, and maybe PA. You may have some options assuming that you are into it, and your parents would not mind. If this is something you would like to do, network a bit.

Josh Jarvis just had some vehichle issues that he has to pay for, so he may love someone sharing fuel costs with him if he can make it.

A couple of the more interesting species you should be able to find near near Bonne Terre are Missouri Saddled Darter and Bleeding Shiner. You might try emailing Bob Hrabik (Robert.Hrabik@mdc.mo.gov). He is NANFA's MO regional rep, and he lives not very far from Bonne Terre. I'm sure he knows some sampling spots near there.

Bleeding Shiners are beautiful, I'll be sure to look for some! Can they can be bred in aquaria if I bring a wild pre spawn group into a warmer tank? I have a feeling that late march would be the perfect time to catch most pre spawn Cyprinids and Darters.

I'll have to see, my schedule is very busy this year as well but I'll see what I have going on when it gets closer to the time. I'm 99.999% sure I'm going to the 2016 convention in NH though, much closer (only 7-8 hours) and some very interesting species up there, both fresh and saltwater, for somewhere that's not known for its biodiversity. Not to mention the Salmonid fishing for someone like me who's a fanatic fly fisherman!

Yes, late March should still be pre-spawn for most minnows and darters. Many spawn in April and May. I don't know about breeding Bleeding Shiners in an aquarium. Maybe someone else here can provide information on that, or you could just try it yourself using general guidelines (quality food, raise temperature, increase light duration, build artificial chub mound).

Also, I like Matt's suggestion of seeing if there's someone you can ride with to the convention. You would certainly have a great time!
