Agree with you Matt but my post would start with "I have a basic distrust of government..."

Isn't that just implied nowadays? Does anyone whole heartedly trust government anymore? :)

Our erosion of trust in government is primarily due to banking & other big business pretty much controlling most aspects of government now.   At least "government" still has to go through the motions of being a public decision-making body; not so for business.

True to a very large extent. But, in an economy with at least a modicum of capitalism working in it, the grassroots can still make changes; the "green" movement that sprang up several years ago and has, surprisingly to me, sustained some momentum for example. Now, how much big business actually went green and how much is lip-service, smoke and mirrors is debatable; but even big business can be brought to. More or less. Even if it took the years of effort that the current "green" mentality took to sink into the wallets of the public. I guess my point is things aren't ever as hopeless as we like to think they are, big picture, even when the the pictures ain't always so good. We just have to make the good happen.

I have to strongly disagree with you there.  I am not at all convinced that government operates in the open any more than business does. Both organizations are run by people that are in general looking out for their own interests.

I am very libertarian and have no love for big government, but look at us forum staff overstepping the bounds ourselves here. We should all do some government bashing one evening in Oklahoma. Don't you all agree?

Only if it leads us in the direction of the FAI/CNT anarchist militias of the Spanish Civil War, rather the the goofy American "libertarianism" of the modern day. With that condition I agree. Of course, I'm sure others wouldn't, and therein lies the problem. (For a fuller reference check out George Orwell's book "Homage to Catalonia"). And now, back to North American fishes.......

See this is why we should stop now. Your post could easily be offensive to goofy libertatians like myself. So let us get it back on track before anyone else says something offensive about the politics of others. Agreed?
