Had to escape the Illinois winter, so Miciah and I road tripped down to Tennessee over the weekend to see if any fish would be biting.
West Fork Red River --> Red River --> Cumberland River
We made a valiant effort to find redtail chubs willing to bite, but they refused to make an appearance. The habitat looked great for Nocomis chubs, so we both agreed this will be a spot to visit again when it's warmer.
Grassy Branch --> Aenon Creek --> Rutherford Creek --> Duck River
This spot was supposed to have good numbers of redband darters, and sure enough we were able to find one hungry for a tiny bit of redworm.
Redband Darter (Etheostoma luteovinctum)
Big Bigby Creek --> Duck River
Forgot to take a photo of the creek here. Saw tons of darters that wouldn't bite, grrrrrr. Found 5 or 6 saddled madtoms that wouldn't bite, grrrrr. The only fish that were happy to cooperate were the always aggressive banded sculpin. My hands were beginning to get pruny from the elements.
Banded Sculpin (Cottus carolinae)
Little Shoal Creek --> Shoal Creek --> Tennessee River
No fish were seen or caught!
Holly Creek --> Shoal Creek --> Tennessee River
Rainbow Darter (Etheostoma caeruleum)
Tennessee Shiner (Notropis leuciodus)
