When do you guys start collecting around these parts? Its starting to warm up, but generally I don't see movement in the water when I go fishing this early.

Googling your location, you're just a few hours north of me (and several hours west) so our climates our probably fairly similar. For me personally, living just outside pittsburgh, PA, I'm beginning my collecting season this Saturday. Not sure if I'll catch anything but going to try anyway, normally there's always at least one or two fish to turn up no matter way time of year.

I've gone along the rivers and creeks in the area and haven't seen a whole lot of minnow activity. A few little guys in a forest preserve, but they're hands off.

The fish will be there, look for seasonally flooded side channels where current isn't as strong.

Right now, the fish are moving into their normal holding areas. Yesterday I caught loads of jacked up creek chubs in the main current on flies in 39 degree water. They were sitting in the eddies and darting out for drifting food. Much more agressively than the trout, I might add.

I thought about it, but I was 2 hours from home, and got a late start. As much as I wanted to photograph 1/2 pound creek chubs, I was too busy trying to eradicate a pair of European brown trout.

If there was a Like option, I'd like Matt's last post.

I was thinking the same thing.

I threw a minnow trap out in the Des Plaines near Willowbrook and didn't get anything. Let it sit there overnight. Did the same in a few different spots in the Sag Quarries with no luck either.
