Daddy and I found the sculpins in a steam that leads into Issaqueena Lake. They are not pretty but they are cool fish though.

They like a little current and some like a lot of current. We found a snake on a branch. It was a Queen Snake. It had 3 stripes. 2 were a yellowy color and 1 was a reddish color.

Erin and I had a great time romping through the Clemson Experimental Forest. Thanks to some sweet intel from Mr. Stephen Beaman, we were onto the sculpins right away. I was especially excited because I had been hoping to find these guys for a couple years now and kept striking out. Erin helped me work dipnets and seines and although we didn't find a ton, Cottus bairdi (if that is still a correct id) showed in the net consistently. As Twerp said, these fish ain't pretty in the traditional sense, but they are way cool. Some of the colors in the mottling, and the orange-red tails are especially neat. This little stream wasn't big enough to pack much current due to its small volume, but did an admirable job with what it had to work with. For some reason I had it in my mind that these fish would want rougher water than this. Can't wait to get back and give it a more thorough looking through!

Look at the mouths on these guys!

Nice catch and photo Twerp...

Sculpin are pretty but only in an ugly kinda way!  I like how redish yours is... look at this crazy white-ish / blonde-ish one I found in Oklahoma!

I think of sculpin as water bulldogs. That's what they remind me of. I do think they are pretty, but I also think my bulldogs are pretty. Good stuff.

I like the bulldog analogy. The only thing to make it more accurate would be if sculpins drooled...
