My dad sent me a picture of a fish he caught in a pond somewhere in south Louisiana. He says it's more green sunfish and I say it's a warmouth or rock bass. What do yall think?7138f7d73b02f4aa5de9db74ae4ab634.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think it may be a green. Having only 3 anal spines eliminates Ambloplites (5-6 anal spines).

Lepomis of some sort but not pure green.  Coloration does not rule out warmouth, especially when just pulled from murky water.

The anal fin rays may be wrong, but if that fish does not have Ambloplites in the wood pile, I would be really surprised.

I agree that it looks kind of similar to Ambloplites. However, another thing to consider is that most of LA, and all of south LA, is outside of range for Ambloplites.

Everyone is correct on the fish being not an Ambloplites. This fish in question has only three anal spines. It do looks like a warmouth cross to me.

Even given the water,I think a full-blooded warmouth would have patterns of some sort. The two-colored scales look warmouth-esque, but a full-blood would probably have some sort of gill/face pattern, at least from what I've seen. I'd vote warmouth/??? cross.

Fish that is pulled out of murky waters tend to be colorless.

Looks like a dull female green sunfish to me.

Warmouth is at least part of picture.  Hybrid with green would have some obvious green characteristics, especially with the vertical fins.  Color pattern which green component can not hide.  Mouth too big to involve other Lepomis spp as a hybrid.

That is an odd one, what about Redspotted x Warmouth based off location and the body pattern of the pigmented scales coming from the redspotted.

Mouth too large for Red Spotted Sunfish to be in cross.  Green-cross only one with such a big yap.
