I pulled this fish out of Gans Creek (Missouri River drainage in Boone Co./Columbia, Missouri) this morning. I immediately thought stoneroller (Largescale and Central are in Boone Co.), but lacking my books I'm not certain. Google Images hasn't helped me much eithe (What are some good/reliable online resources for fish ID?). I'd really like to (eventually) figure this one out on my own....so could anyone chime in and let me know if I'm on the right track with stoneroller or if I should be spending my time with another group of species?

Yes. Those freaky Ozark stonerollers with the head of a longnose dace. Is this the highland stoneroller?

Edit. Rereading, is highland not an option? We noticed this elongated head right away in some of the OK. populations. I thought they might have been highland stonerollers. Maybe it is just typical for central or largescale in that area to have this streamlined head.

Could this be a flathead chub or one of its relatives?  They're pretty common in the Missouri River.

Sure looks like a stoneroller to me, and we saw similar ones in small streams in OK. Look at the bottom jaw in the first photo. Sure looks like a scraper to me.

I'm not sure common is a good word to describe Flathead Chub in Missouri, where it's state endangered!

Not commmon in Missouri, just the mainstem Missouri River.  That's what I heard from the collecting work for the new Fishes of MO book.  I haven't seen a flathead chub in person.  I'm not betting any money that that's what your fish is.  It's an odd looking stoneroller though, so figured it would be worth investigating.

I think it's a stoneroller. I think the eye is too large for flathead chub. I also think flathead chub would have a more pointy and slightly concave dorsal fin.

I caught another few individuals of whatever this is in a different Boone Co., Missouri stream today. They were in large schools that hugged the bottom and were (generally) not very interested in redworms or pink gulp worms.

Positively whatever long headed stoneroller is there. That mouth is 100% Campostoma.

Yes, uncommon in Missouri. Most recent I recall hearing is that it is likely extirpated from the state of Missouri, unfortunately.
