I've had a tropical planted community tank for awhile. I got my hands on a 40 gallon breeder tank and would like to do a native tank. My problem is that I have no idea where to start. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

What type of habitats/fishes interest you?

Cyprinids and Darters in a stream tank would be my recommendation.

I thought about doing a planted stream tank with a sump and power head for filtration and current. But, I don't know what species I have around here or how to collect them. I want hardy species because I'd hate to not care for them correctly and end up killing them.

I also wasn't sure if the wide footprint of my tank would be conducive to a stream, or if it would look better as a deeper marsh

What type of habitat are you interested in creating? I lived in the Scranton area for a couple years, and much of my life has revolved around the Tioga County, PA / Steuben County, NY area. (Half a state away, those last two are, but not terribly dissimilar.) My most vivid memories of the waters there are of smallish to medium-sized rocky streams with some type of current and heavily vegetated small farm ponds and peat bog/marshy small lake-type waters. I tend to think of stream tanks as having a more narrow footprint and "still water" tanks as feeling "boxier" in footprint, but that's mostly in my head. I get the impression you are capable of pulling either off in that 40. With a stream tank it's all about the positioning of your current generators and your tank furniture (rocks and roots, no plants). I do well to get Java Moss to grow, so I can't help at all regarding a pond/marsh set up. .

As for the fish, a good field guide like Peterson's would serve you well. Also this site, created by a NANFAn would be a really good starting point. http://fishmap.org/

Thank you. I was wondering if there was anyone from my area on here. I got a free 50 that needs to be repaired, I think I'll save that for my stream and use the 40 pond/marsh.
