What's next? Siberian lynx. Chinese alligators.

Really? Is the name Asian carp really hurting anyone's feelings? Or is this senator just trying to get his name on a bill? Doesn't he have real work to do?

Please don't turn this into a liberal/conservative thing. Just have a chuckle and think of the slippery slope. Just how many common names in the animal kingdom would have to be changed? I can't think of a better way to name a plant or animal than including where it comes from in the name. Maybe it is a bit different with Asian carp, as that is more of a generalization. The term refers to multiple species.

CONSPIRACY!!!

Don't fall for it! He's only trying to remove the "Asian" tag so he can import mass quantities of them to Minnesota without undue opposition from white supremacy groups! He's actually a deep undercover American Imperialist Party ("an AT-AT in every pot") wonk who plans to have them overrun every last one of the 10,000 lakes; including Lakes Superior and Woebegone!!!

Once the carp are established he's going to get all the droids he has stored in Area 51 and run them on carp oil! He's taking over the world and it's starting in Minnesota! By the time our hockey lovin', Prince groovin', Vikes cheerin' brethren know what happened it'll be to late. You betcha!!!!!

Don't let them change that name! Saving the planet begins with you!

Yeah, I know; my nerd is showing.

Thread derailed. You can thank me later, Matt D! ;)

Is Breitbart one of those new sites like the onion?

If changing the name causes the fish to sound more delicious, then we should definitely change the name.

Keep in mind Fundulus' one word response. Apparently Breitbart is a right-wing propaganda machine masquerading as an alternative to mainstream media. Not that I can pretend to be an expert. I don't have the stomach for that nonsense, no matter who's slinging it.

Did not know that, but swai is the iridescent shark sold in the aquarium trade. Responding to Ben's post, I would rather eat iridescent shark(sounds exotic) than swai.

Swai is cheap, tastes at least as good as farm raised channel catfish, and probably contains agent orange. But iridescent shark sounds tasty even with the agent orange.

Whatever. I could care less about the politics or which way the source leans. This is true. It is not just on Breitbart. It is not just on conservative media. I looked into it more after Bruce brought the source to my attention. I momentarily though it was a satirical publication like the Onion. That would have made much more sense. Sadly it is true. Probably won't be a big deal, but this could be as interesting as E. spectabile and E. stigmaeum.

The article pretty much says it all. I don't think we can contribute much else. Just be ready to begin using a new term to describe those jumping boat bashing vermin. And lets hope we do not have to begin spending too much time learning new common names.
