It's short notice, but I thought I'd post here since I usually do.

David Cravens and myself will be heading down to the Green River on Saturday for Clean the Green.  After the event, we'll be doing some seining and such.  If you're in KY, or nearby, you should come join us.

The Nature Conservancy and the Kentucky Waterways Alliance are partnering to bring you the annual Clean the Green event. Mark your calendars for August 8 to help protect one of America’s most biologically diverse rivers!

When:
  • August 8, 2015 beginning at 9 am eastern time / 8 am central time
Where: Who:
  • If you can navigate a canoe or kayak, we want to see you there!
  • There are a limited number of canoes available.  If you have your own canoe or kayak, please bring it to allow others without boats to participate.
What
  • Volunteers will meet to clean up the Green River, one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the country.  The event is free but a small donation is needed to reserve a canoe.  Each participant will receive a lunch, a commemorative T-shirt, a water bottle, plus a chance to win a kayak!
  • …to bring?  We strongly recommend bringing:
    • a pair of gloves
    • sunscreen
    • insect repellent
    • a canoe (if you have one)
    • … and wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty!
  • NOTE: Canoe reservations now require a small donation to offset the costs of this event. If you register without making a donation, your party will be placed on the waiting list. Please wait on confirmation email for reservation!!! If the event is cancelled, your donation will be refunded. (You will be redirected to the Clean the Green donation page after submitting your registration form.) Multiple floats will be offered to appeal to all levels of water warriors! 2 people per canoe.
    • Roachville Ford to Russell Ford:  7 miles, 4 of 6 canoes available, 8:00 am central start time
    • American Legion Park to Heye Takeout:  5 miles, 6 of 8 canoes available, 8:30 am central start time
    • Russell Ford to American Legion Park:  2.5 miles, 14 of 22 canoes available, 9:00 am start time
Partners:

We can’t wait to see all of our dedicated volunteers show their love to the Green River on August 8, 2015!

I sure wish Josh would have said something earlier.  That would have made the 3rd motivation to get to central KY this month.

Yeah, sorry about that.  It's just that I've posted CTG here for the past 3-4 years and only had 1 other person meet me there.  Seemed kinda useless.  Can I assume hanging out with me isn't a viable motivation in general?

From personal experience that can play into it, especially when you doubt one's ability to ID a rainbow...

Just a quick recap for anyone interested.

To start the day, I met with David Cravens and we traveled down to Greensburg.  I was able to get 2 guys from the Louisville Tropical Fish group to meet us down there.  David and I brought them to this location a few years ago to show them native fish.

Arriving early, we setup the aquarium and NANFA material and chatted with a few of the other there.

The River was beautiful Saturday.

We floated the river and picked a lot of large items out of the water, including many car parts, sheet metal, and David was able to find 3 soda cans to pickup...  :)

After the cleanup, we did a little seining to show-off some of the fish population

Pretty sure it's just a Striped Shiner and a Rainbow Darter....David

After we collected a few fish, we went back to the park area to the setup tank.  We started not to put fish in the aquarium because many people had already left.  However, the girls softball tournament brought in an eager crowd.

Here's a few of the more noteworthy catches of the day.

In the end it was a great day.  Helped clean up the river, saw some awesome fish, and David had great company....what else can you ask for?

Nice work guys. That gilt darter has good color for the middle of summer. The stargazing minnow is pretty cool too.

Way to go Josh!

I love when NANFA can do this kind of work... mixes environmental folks with fish folks... mixes aquariums with education... excellent example of what we can do locally!

You should have came, I tried to tell you.

I think Mr. Cravens wanted to snorkel, but was scared of being underwater around me...
