I'm trying to decide which size tank to set up. I'm thinking Dollar sunfish. I've only seen them fully grown. I know young shellcrackers/redear and young dollars look similar. So, I wanted to see if anyone could verify?

on a side note, my son caught these and has been keeping them in the tank at his mothers. I have several Native American Lepomis tanks. I'm trying to determine what the long termenclosure I need to keep the in.

Not Redear Sunfish.  Redear lacks striped on operculum.

Find ways for people not already interested in natives to value them.

Based on locality it is either an Eastern Dollar or Red-breasted Sunfish.  The latter appears more elongate but you would need some of each for comparisons.  Look into differences based on spine, ray or scale counts as well as gill rackers that can be used to distinguish even small fish like you have.  Otherwise grow him out.

Thanks. I appreciate the assistant.based on the lake he called it in I'm going to say dollar for now and get a little bigger. I've never call any redear in this particular body of water but I have pulled adult dollars and bluegill.
