Went out today to the Green River here in Kentucky. Caught several different species. The only ones I wanted to double check on and get a second opinion on was what I have identified as spotted darters.

Look a little red on the caudal fin to me.  Don't see any red spots either plus no color in throat area.  Someone may overrule me but does not look like maculatum to me

The pictures are horrible. The spots are red. Fins had a orange color to them but no red.

This is what I see as a typical Green River spotted darter

I am pretty sure it is a spotted darter. Small size makes it a bit harder to ID, but I think you have it right. Dark halos around the spots. Pointed snout.

What else could it be?  Isn't spotted the only Nothonotus in there with these obvious spots?

It is. I was thrown off with the caudal fin coloring. Not something I've seen down there. Chalk it up to mutation I guess.

It's a hybrid, it's a hybrid... Looks like a small bloodfin... It's a hybrid!

Oh wait this isn't a sunfish post... Never mind.

I think the red you see David is from the skin of his hand showing through the membrane. Would not look so red in a photo tank picture.

That made me look up the species at that location when I saw the red/orange too.  I think Matt is right though, 1st time for everything, it may be Corey's skin making it look more reddish than it really was.

Smaller spotteds with their fins down can look a bit like bluebreasts to me. Many even have blue breasts. The nose shape and dark halos around the spots as well as the lack of almost white margins on the three rear fins are good ID characteristics.

I definitely need to make a ID tank. How wide are they normally?

People have various sizes. 3x8x6 would be fairly good for most fish. 3x8 being the footprint.  Most fish that are larger can usually be Identified with a photo in hand. So unless you want to build tanks for photography in addition to a photo ID tank, I would not go much larger. Most people also use a "squeeze paddle" that is just slightly smaller than the internal dimensions of the tank to gently squeeze the fish up against the front. Make that out of acrylic.

I was curious how people kept the fish up against the front. I'll have to make a squeeze paddle also.

I think if you search photo tank here, you will find some good info. Michael Wolfe did a write up on his simple and very functional photo tank build. There may also be some info from Uland on his excellent but more involved tanks. Both are more than adequate for an ID tank. I think Ben Cantrell had a link to a ready made Q-tip holder( I believe that is what its intended use is.) that works as well. It is cheap, and very small, so easy to transport. the only drawback is that is very small.
