I took this photo in early september from a bridge and thought nothing of it except bad photo.

A couple weeks ago I was wondering where the warm water/cold water boundary was (it is near this spot somewhere) when I thought of this fish with the red eyes, and worriedly thought "what kind of fish has red eyes?"

I could only think rock bass and smallmouth as possibilities, neither of which should be that close to trout water. But I am not sure on the ID as a photo from a bridge leaves much to be desired without a lateral view.

I posted the photo on the fish and game facebook a week ago and this week told a warden of it directly. But I wonder if I should do more? Should I sent the photo to a fisheries biologist? Maybe I am panicking too much, it was a small fish,.

I actually don't see anything in this photo to indicate that the fish has red eyes. The fish's right eye appears to have a golden color. I can't make out much color in its left eye, but there is a red spot in front of it. However, I think it is likely an effect of the refraction of light by the surface of the water. Your image is filled with these color artifacts. There is also possibly some color noise from your camera's sensor. I bet you have nothing to worry about.

I think that's actually a small injury or possibly a growth rather than an eye. He appears to have a normal eye (though stretched out by water distortion) on the other side of his head, and the red spot in question appears to be slightly in front of where his eye ought to be.

You guys must have eagle eyes. I see a distorted image of a fish in the water.
