I caught a lot of orangethroat darters yesterday and kept 4, 2 pairs with the intention of spawning them in a small tank because the females were ripe and ready. I also had a trio of johnny darters in the bucket as well over night to let them acclimate up to room temperature. Today I found eggs on the bottom of the bucket and the 2 female johnny's still seem quite plump but the female orangethroats are noticeable thinner. I pulled the eggs out and put them in a dish of clean water and counted 49. I also took out the johnny's and set them up in a small tank with a cave for spawning but decided to just give the orangethroats some fresh water and left them in the bucket because the eggs will be easier to find in there than if I put them in a tank. Has anyone else had this happen with these or any other darter species? or spawning on the floor of a empty tank? As a side note I don't particularly want to keep the adults just wanted to see how easily they would spawn and try to raise a few of the young so if someone is interested in 2 pairs of orangethroats let me know and I'll send them to you for the cost of shipping.

Both pairs are spoken for, and I have not seen any more eggs in the bucket so they may already be done spawning.

I got a second set of eggs from the remaining pair of orangethroats (sent one pair out already) and the johnny darters have now spawned in their cave I built them (hopefully pictures will follow). The bad news is the first set of orangethroat eggs all got covered in fungus so I cleaned out the tray very well and put clean water a small amount of salt and a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide in this time. Hopefully the results will be better.

Mine arrived today. I was rather shocked to find some fungused eggs and empy eggshells in the bag with them. Looks like they weren't quite done.Congrats on the spawns! Thanks for the pics aswell.

Thats interesting that they apparently were trying to spawn in transit, I had not tried to spawn orangethroats before but there was literally nothing to it.
