Around here on some beaches "North Carolina" we have gray sand that squeaks, it i a very fine silica with black specks, It compacts very fast but fish can almost swim in it,,,

Has anyone used this sand in a freshwater aquarium? I usually go with regular pool filter sand,

I am thinking  I am thinking of using this "singing sand" in my next tank.

The tank is going to be set up fresh water native but I am still considering native saltwater as well, maybe native sharks and rays, maybe even some brackish fishes. Any opinions?

The sand is easy to fluidize and I plan keep a large percentage of the sand bed fluidized like the bottom of an artesian fed lake..   It doesn't contain any calcium.

I recommend sea robins ... to maintain the squeak ... unless you plan to walk around in the tank yourself.  I have used NC beach sand (with fine-ground shell particles) in tanks for brackish and Tanganyika fish.  Only downside I can think of is if you have an impeller-driven filter, you dont want those fines getting in; but with air-driven filters it should be OK.  Keeping "a large percentage ... fluidized" may not be easy (or necessary).

I want to emulate the springs that flow up through the sand at the bottom of those lakes not fluidised the entire tank bottom. So many cool things to catch and out in an aquarium, from blennies to sharks and rays.  I used to collect marine fish a long time ago,we even have butterfly fish and angelfish, even lion fishes.

I still have some time  think about it, so many fishes so little time, I may just stick with native freshwater species, if can get a net under them. If I manage to get something really cool the yabba dabba do!  to

I have a really cool video of this that I took when on vacation last month.  I'll try to upload it this weekend.
