I have a pair of banded pygmy sunfish ready to breed in a very swamplike 10g (Surface covered with salvinia, one half planted, the other half mostly full of java moss, lots of daphnia/copepods). My only concern is the heavy population I have of Malaysian Trumpet, Ramshorn, and Pond snails. I know they often go after the eggs of fish, but will the male protect the nest from snails? What are the chances any of the eggs will survive?

Can't really give you any mathmatical odds... but I can tell you that sometimes the fish win... I have a tanks similar to your description... 10g, surface covered with watter lettuce, lots of java moss, some pieces of slate to create caves/overhangs... and I have had at least one successful spawn of bandeds... I have seen the extra fish (more and smaller than any I put in the tank)... so it could work out for you...

Just to update...The pygmys spawned sometime Tuesday (I found the eggs in my java moss while showing drewish my tanks). I separated the bunch of moss that they spawned in and placed it in a livebearer-breeder trap after knocking off as many snails as I could. I am happy to report that I now have larval zonatum!

Cool! Just holler if ya need a freshwater rotifer culture until they can take BBS.
once theyre swimming you can put small snails back in to clean up dead BBS

Thank you! I should be alright though, this tank has been going for about a year now with pond water culture, and has lots of life. I actually turned on the tank lights this morning and was able to watch the zooplankton dive towards the bottom. I also regularly supplement with phytoplankton. I should be all set, though this is my first time really trying to raise any fry besides guppies, so any advice is appreciated.
