If anyone can  hook me up with some shovelnose sturgeon fingerlings in the coming year as well as paddle fingerlings. I would appreciate it I look to writing  about about keeping them captivity

Thanks for considering it

In all seriousness, have you considered a fishing expedition to obtain some? I know a few guys over at roughfish.com in the Midwest who are great at catching sturgeon and they'll often land 10-20 Shovelnose in a few hours of fishing! If you want, I could try to reach out to them for you? Though I'm not sure they'd know how to bag and ship live fish as most of them don't keep fish.

Yup, just do a road trip to somewhere where you can catch them reliably.  Myself and a friend caught 6 of them in 3 hours earlier this summer at the Chain of Rocks spot on the Mississippi River by St. Louis.  No juveniles, but a few were small enough to still have the whips on their tails.

I think it would be best to get captive bred individuals if possible but if it's legal that would be a good idea but they would have to be quite small to be shipped I bet... .

I'd have to travel about 1500 miles to fish for them  I would appreciate it very much if you could do that and see what their reaction is, it might be illegal to keep small paddlefish..,

Those paddlefish are being sold at 10" to 14", I have very good luck with some I got that were less than 3" long but I'm betting a 14" paddlefish would be difficult to adapt to even a 225. I have sent him a note on occasion about shovelnose sturgeons but he has none available.

IMHO and I know i not an expert but fish adapt better to captivity when the are obtained at a very small size, I know paddlefish respond better to captivity like this, once they get the layout of their tank down, I kept several for 3 years, I had to move several times during that time and they didn't respond well to being moved for some reason. The paddlefish I had were "dinks" fish from a brood that wouldn't grow like their brood mates, after three years the biggest one and last one was 10"

Starting with small fish has always worked well for me.

Interest in these fishes is so high I bet I could easily sell them, a hundred at least, not sure I would but there is a wide spread interest.

If we need to satisfy a number of fish for an order I would probably work with you. I have a 1/4 acre pond that I can recirculate water from. Can hold fish for a bit in a 700 gallon container recirculated, but would want to know that we had homes for them. I had circumstances that blew the paddlefish deal this year for me, but am willing to try something like this again. I can hold them and ship them. Not too interested in marketing them. Can run up the holding space to 2300 gallons if need be. But then again I have no interest in shipping big fish. I may be able, but I do not want to hold the risk. Also need to do better than break even. I am plenty experienced in shipping.

Jones fish is less than 20 miles from me. I can get anything they have. However I need to be paid well for my trip to and from, plus fish and shipping. Also If Jonahs is carrying the same fish, I will not ship them. Get them from Jonahs.

I got my answer, they said they only spawn them for special orders mostly for the Gov. They offered me adults and $350 a piece, but I doubt my ability to breed them. I asked if they might put some aside when they do spawn them for me and others who might want them but no answer yet.

As far as i know Jonah's does not sell sturgeons shovelnose or otherwise or are we talking about different people?

No, but Mark Binkley(Jonah's) has access to certain gamefish and occasionally paddlefish from Jones hatchery. I know and like Mark, and will not pick up anything from the hatchery to ship out if it competes with his business. Otherwise if he does not offer it and it is on Jones list, I could grab something and ship it out as long as it was cost effective. I think the paddlefish they occasionally have in stock are way over priced and a bit big to be shipped easily.

If you do figure out a sturgeon plan, let me know. Like I said, I could house and ship them as long as I did better than break even and my time was compensated for.

I think I've shipped fish to Jonah's before, one of our regular vendors anyway, inland silversides as I recall, beautiful fishes. I wonder if one of our regular vendors might have a better chance of getting shovelnose fingerlings than an individual..
