Hi Everyone,

Glad to find this forum and I look forward to reading many more of the informative posts I've already browsed through.

I am originally from Maryland. I grew up sailing and crabbing and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. I've lived in Oklahoma for nearly 14 years now - Basically out in the middle of nowhere on the Canadian River. We have a stream and a creek - the difference between them is that one is always running and full of water and the other (what I call the stream) is usually nothing more than several puddles of shallow water amidst a bed of beautiful moss covered creek bottom rocks. It runs when it rains and quickly drops back down to scatterred puddles of water.

Collecting native fish started for me when fishing. I run trot lines on the river, throw out the casting net and catch bait and was immediatley dazzled by all the wonderful creatures I'd catch in the net. Baby cats, buffalo, drums and minnows galore. I think shad are really beautiful fish too, but have found them too delicate for me to keep in a tank (sm 15 gal.) or in my fish pond (newly renovated to about 500 gal. by my husbands best guess on size). I've never really looked too hard for ID's on any of the fish I bring to my tank until my boys and I recently found and caught something I'd never seen here before in the "stream" in a very shallow puddle of water while catching tadpoles and snails. Turns out it is a gorgeous redfin darter - which is the round about way I ended up finding this forum.

The redfin darter is an exciting find for us. Among my most exciting native aquatic finds have been the baby softshell turtle ( I had him for a year and sadly lost him during the ice storm) and my pink minnows from the river. I probably should look into a proper ID - I just call them pink minnows because they have pink on their tails and fins.

Sorry this got so long. I guess I am a little type happy sometimes. Look forward to getting to know y'all here!

Tiffany
