Hoping to get some advice on what might be happening in my tank...

I received some new Pumpkinseeds and Bluegills a few weeks ago and everyone has been looking great until two days ago when I noticed one of the smaller Pumpkinseeds (about 1.5 inch) hiding during feeding time. I looked closer and noticed its right fin was bright red and looked tattered. I assumed it was an injury from bullying and moved him out of the tank into a separate 20 gallon for quarantine. The next day I noticed another Pumpkinseed hiding with the same red tattered right fin and moved him out too. I treated both with salt hoping to see a good recovery. This morning the first Pumpkinseed removed was dead, and the second isn't looking good. (photos attached) My biggest fear is that this could be something else-Hemorrhagic Septicemia? I am seeing some slight red on another small Pumpkinseed's fin. I've never dealt with Hemorrhagic Septicemia...would it only appear on one fin at a time? I know it can be really aggressive so any advice on whether you think it is and treatment will be very appreciated. I attached photos of the remaining Pumpkinseed in quarantine to help.

The tank:

(This is a holding tank for fish that will be moved into a display tank)

350 gallon

9 Bluegills ranging in size from 1.5 inch to 3 inch.

8 Pumpkinseed ranging from 1.5 inch to 3 inch

PH 7.2 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5.0-10 before water changes.

Bio tower along with UV

Entire tank recently treated with Prazipro after new fish were introduced, if anyone has recommendations on other preventatives-anti bacterial treatments, preferably ones that don't affect the biological filtration, that would be great. Don't want to stress the tank out too much, but wondering if I should just treat the entire holding tank to be safe.

Thank you in advance

Hi ccarceo,

Your guesses mirror mine.  Aggression which led to an infection and then death.  It is typical for the aggressor to keep hitting the same spot.  In your case, the right pec fin and surrounding area.  I agree the tissue near the base of the fin looks inflamed.  Salt would help keep secondary infection to a minimum, but there doesn't appear to be any significant open wounds.  This is where IM antibiotic injections would come in but they may not be an option for you.  However, the fish in the picture appears a little thin--(I know you just received them) and being as small as it is, plus any residual stress from shipping may have already had them on the ropes.....in regards to their immune system.

Try adding a lot more structure for smaller, less dominant fish to hid around and offer food in multiple locations during feeding.  It seems like your tank is so big with few, small fish that there is room for the dominant ones to become bullies and patrol a large territory.  Sunfish dynamics can be "fun" like this at times.  Hope it works out for you.

I would remove puny fish from the community setting and condition them in a tank devoid of gravel.  If treatment with antibiotics to be pursued, then you can manage complications with filtration better.  Get fish back into good weight before re-introducing to the community tank.

Find ways for people not already interested in natives to value them.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm going to add some more hiding places/plants to the larger tank. In the meantime I'm separating the smaller ones and giving them a chance to grow in a holding tank. Hopefully this will stop the issue.

ccarceo, you are new here... this is a very old joke... Irate predicts the demise of your fish, not matter what the actual ailment or condition may be... its "his thing"

It was funnier when he just said "it will die." "Dreaded red streaks of death" is pretty good though.

I miss the old avatar too, Martin... whatever it was.

I was going to say that seemed a little extreme! haha I like the joke. I may or may not have had nightmares about red streaks of death attacking all my fish...but nonetheless good joke.

I'll have to put the old avatar back on. I can't find the one that Matt made for me. That "thing" is a cat (being bathed) with a human face shopped in.
