Same as it ever was, or same as it used-to was?

As I was running my route today I received a surprise- I saw a very adult, but also very roadkilled River Otter. Apparently these critters, my favorite wild quadrupeds, are making a comeback. Seems they are shirttailing on the skyrocketing beaver numbers. Interesting to ponder what effects the increased numbers of these guys might have on fishes.

I had to drive out to Columbia this morning for a day of staff development. I swear I saw a roadkill otter on I-95 and one on I-20. This is based on coloration, size and what I could see of the tails. It's hard to make an ID at 80, er 70 mph. I guess with so many forests flooded down here the otters are moving all over the place.

My friend caught this in a beaver trap in southwestern Frederick co Virginia. Never saw one before. It upset him so much he pulled all his traps. Since then he has counted several more on the same lake. Looks like we have more of them than anyone would have imagined.
