I am trying to find about a dozen small stream caught Bluegill from that area for personal interest. Anyone collecting that area? By small I mean 3/4" to 1".

If you don't get other volunteers, I am sure I can get down that way for you in the next couple of months.

I may have spoken too soon... turns out that member does not have a permit and of course, these are game fish in Georgia. We will have to set up a collecting trip for these.

Are those in Georgia typical Handpaint Bluegill?
We are started a study for first time where we can make direct comparisons between Northern Bluegill and a hatchery stock of Coppernose Bluegill. Down the road I would like to do similar with Handpaints. Past playing around with Handpaints was very interesting. I will look into acquiring out of state fish as a private individual as I may have a hoop to jump through.

Based on contacts with our Department of Agriculture I have to declare the fish will be coming in within a 15 day window and I have a 30 window starting from time of recipt of fish where they must be looked at by a vet or other fish health specialist. Rules have changed a bit and we have been exploring boundaries lately for actual research needs.

believe blue gills are not gamefish in fl.
Bluegills are counted as gamefish in Florida (see bottom of page), but since they're usually visible, it's easy enough to catch them legally with a worm bit on a hook.
(But good news, looks like dollars are no longer on the list of gamefish. Pretty sure they used to be.)

When I have angled for these guys they were much more fickel than Northern Bluegill, at least when in the 4" to 7" range. One location in Flordia we sampled by snorkeling with a fishing pole baited with a cricket. The Handpaints were dispersed more than typical of Northerns and it was was as if the Handpaints held more exclusive feeding territories. Locations we sampled were decidedly less productive than Midwestern streams I usually haunt.
