Caught from Horicon Lake in NJ.  What a challenge... this is the smallest hook and line fish I have ever defeated!

I've read that swamp darters are present in Horicon Lake. Could it be?

I would say swamp darter, with the indistinct lateral blotches and faded lines on the dorsal and caudal. The tessellated darter is the only other likely candidate, and usually has better defined blotches and lines.

Note how the lateral line arches upward on the front half of the body (3rd and 5th pix).  That's a characteristic of the "Hololepis" group of darters, and swamp darter is the only one of that group that occurs in NJ.
