Hi NANFAns.  It's been awhile.  Does anyone know a good, easy access collecting site in the vicinity of Richmond?  I'm helping the James River Aquarium Society plan a trip, and I don't know the area very well.

My preference would be for a site that is easy to get to by driving and has decent parking.  An added benefit would be neat or colorful cyprinids, like redbelly and rosyside dace.

Thanks.

You never know what you're going to find, or where you're going to find it. So keep looking.

The boat landing in Maidens Va is easy to get to and has plenty of bank access. Last time I was there we caught quite a few small blue spotted sunfish. Lots of mosquito fish and grass shrimp were easy pickings along the bank. Sallee creek is a short drive from there and has swallowtail minnows and rosefin shiners. It is supposed to have southern redbelly dace according to an old Nanfa field report but I didn't find any there. Lots of small stream in the area with easy access in the area. Good luck with your collecting.

When are you planning your trip? I'm looking to go there in the near future to do some collecting myself.

Don't know if I replied.  The trip date is April 30th.  We've tentatively scheduled it for the Rivanna, west of Charlottesville, at 10:30 a.m. I'm still waiting to hear back from the JRAS folks before finalizing.  I'll keep you posted.

I work in Bowling Green (about 30 min north) and there is good access to many waters in the York watershed with a variety of habitats from blackwater bogs to sandy piedmont streams to rocky fall line areas.  I know you already did the trip but let me know if you want to set up anything in the future
