I have neglected my tank over the past few years and all my wood used to aquascaped was just lying on the bottom. Yesterday I redid some of the aquascape and would like some feedback and any advice to improve it. Such as fill in empty spaces, add more branches or remove stuff.

 

In the pictures you can see 2 rock piles. I was thinking of extending the rock piles along the whole wall. It will have a jetty look. The rocks will be a little smaller and won't come out as much as the two current piles. Will it look good or no? I am worried about water displacement. I don't want to lose to much due to the extra rocks.

What a nice problem to have! If you want a jetty-esque look I think you would want bigger rocks and more of them. The jetties/breakwaters I'm familiar with from the Great Lakes are made of massive rock. (If they aren't some kind of concrete contraption.) If you wanted to keep things more open, maybe lose the two long, horizontal pieces of wood, or position so that bigger one lies flatter and work in some plants.

This is what I have so far. I removed some of the wood and got a bunch of rocks that I didn't add yet. Plants don't make it in the tank, I wish they did. There are 3 bullheads and a goldfish that eat them. I hate the blue background and realized that I would never be happy with it. Once I upgrade my saltwater tank I am going to move these fish into a 300dd with a fake rock background.

 

Here is what I did so far. There is also a picture of my bullheads 30 mins after adding some plants.

I like it. Somehow seems more natural and yet more "groomed" at the same time. Those bullies are so dang cute! You can almost hear 'em trying to figure out what to tear up next. Another place to look for really good aquascaping inspiration is back issues of the now-defunct Freshwater and Marine Aquarium magazine. For a number of years they had a regular column called "Aquascaping". Lots of good design pointers and tips regarding composition.

What size tank is that?  I like the long-lean look of it.
