That moss will eventually cover up that egg crate. Looks really natural, should provide a good home for its inhabitants.

Are you sure?
The moss... im not sure what species it is, has hardly grown past what you see now, it only grows outward and doesnt spread
for that reason, I may have to add more of it

Thanks for the compliment, I didn't think it look natural at all (notably because egg crate is glaringly artificial), but I guess im wrong there

I was ignoring the egg crate. If the moss is growing out can you trim it and tie it into new places with thread? I see it like this. How many streams, lakes etc etc have the wood stacked nice and neat? Or the rocks arranged in a nice neat pattern? None it is chaotic. You capture that well. I'm curious though what those things are on the bottom? They look like rusted metal?

"Those things"
Those are small sticks, leaves, and aquarium safe pine cones
yes, aquarium safe pine cones

Since you cant use normal pine cones I used the next best thing, these
The Leaf litter and sticks are either from lake bottoms or otherwise near water, yes they were floating on the surface for at least a month before it all journeyed down to the gravel

Lets just say that tank was originally set up for JUST blackbanded sunfish (when rainbow shiners became available on Jonah's aquarium they were literally irresistible and 100% worth it, I hope they wont be an issue for the blackbandeds) I want to eventually make the water tannnin-brown, but the pine cones were something I happened upon looking at tropical snails, and I though that they were "Literally perfect" for my setup
I highly recommend the pine cones to you if you want to set up a pine-barrens (or any tank with a lot of woody debris) tank
