From a Desert Fishes Council's email.

Look for Peter Unmack toward the end of the post.

Greetings Desert Fishes Council,

I am happy to announce the winners of the 2016 Conservation Awards. We received more applicants this year than in any previous year, and competition was tight. Many thanks to all who applied.

I would also like to thank the Awards Review committee of Mary Richardson, John Wullschleger, and Astrid Kodric-Brown for their hard work during the review process. We are grateful for your assistance.

The winners are...

Jim Deacon Award:

Elizabeth Paulson, "Restoration of desert springs: community trajectories and ecological outcomes."

Eric Gustafson Education and Outreach Award:

Mauricio De la Maza Benignos, "Engaging the public: Conservation of five critically endangered desert fish species, dissemination of the information of their environmental importance and enhancement of three environmental education centers in Chihuahua, Mexico."

W.L. Minckley Memorial Grant:

Marco Alejandro Escalante Sánchez, "Landscape genetics as conservation tool for Mexican golden trout populations."

DFC Conservation Grants:

Carlos Ballesteros-Córdova, "Specific identity of the desert chub populations (Gila eremica DeMarais 1991) from the Sonora and Mátape River basins, Sonora."

Chuck Minckley, "Renovation of Los Ojitos Spring Including a population estimate for the Yaqui Chub (Gila purpurea)."

Dave Propst, "Response of aquatic fauna to consecutive mega-wildfires."

Peter Unmack, "Conservation genetics of Red-fin Blue-eye, one of the worlds most threatened species."

The recipients will present their research at the 2016 DFC Annual Meeting in New Mexico this November, so stay tuned for great things.

Congratulations to all!
