Casper and I met up with Jeremy Monroe and Dave Herasimtchuk, from Freshwaters Illustrated, on the Hiwassee River this past Saturday.  We found a lot of inactive Chub mounds, but Dave found an active one and we all spent a lot of time filming and shooting.  Casper and I left Jeremy and Dave at the Hiwassee while we moved on to check on the Tennessee Dace place and then on to Spring Creek which is really silty, but interesting.

Plus one tired architect.

As in most construction project there were bloodsuckers to contend with

There was a tiny interloper though.  Casper found this tiny, larval Hellbender, 2"-3", searching for eggs in an adjacent mound.

Wow! Great work. I am struck by how those Tennessees seem to glow. And I am rather fond of turtle leach. And everyone knows I love the architect.

Really cool pictures, Bryce.  TN shiners usually end up in my collection bucket when I need a few mid-water inhabitants and I've grown to enjoy their iridescent greens and yellows but have never had one get 1/2 as pink/orange as their wild counterparts.  Best I've ever seen in captivity is the bottom right fish in picture #4.  It's interesting to me how some fish in captivity, (like MRBD) will get fired up as if they were on a chub nest and others won't.

Michael, what has been your experience working with Yellowfins?

The ONLY time you see Tennessee orange is during a UT football game or over mounds and pits.  For simple elegance consider the Telescope Shiner.

Spawning is occurring NOW in many Tennessee rivers, creeks and streams.

But you better be ready for the intense chilling effect.

Good job Bryce.

If it's not below 50F, the Boddingtons Pub Ale in the pockets of my dive belt doesn't get cold enough to drink.  Nor do the 'mountains' turn blue on the Coors cans.

But you better be ready for the intense chilling effect.

Yes, I'm becoming more fascinated by Telescopes after keeping some tanks of them this spring. A school of ~20 in a large tank is a sight to see, all holding position together right above the substrate facing into the current.

Michael, what has been your experience working with Yellowfins?

Yellowfins will hold some reddish coloration most of the time, but nothing special... but if they do get excited I have seen the white fins come out and the fish go almost all red (but still keep the black lateral stripe).  I have seen a few times that the fish go totally red and get a totally white head... but never in a tank.
