It took a little over a year, but after moving from Missouri to Maryland last summer I finally had a chance to microfish for some minnows in Maryland this past weekend.

I'm starting to wade back into figuring out fish IDs, and this one has me a bit stumped. Common Shiner? If not, could someone help me by pointing out what features are wrong for Common Shiner?

Caught in the Patuxent River drainage in Maryland. (Photographed in my little photo-tank stream side and then released)

Appears to be similiar to the Common Shiners we observed while snorkeling NH.  I have photos... but yet to work through them properly.

I have been markedly wrong with my ID's of late though!

On Thursday Michael and i were snorkeling below a mill pond in the breached rubble run and there were several Common Shiners worked up and in color.  I suspect they were spawning but the area just above them was too shallow for us to settle into.  I could only capture fleeting images of them but with more time and patience i bet we could have seen some fry making activity.

At the breached dam base we found Brook Trout and i think a multitude of little American Eels in addition to several other species in the torrential flow.

Lots of white suckers and fallfish in this area. And I saw one long nose dace just down stream a bit.

Thanks, guys! Glad to know I haven't completely forgotten what little I learned about minnows a couple years ago!
