i would like to keep a chain pickerel in a 80 gallon tank for a couple of months. what would be the largest size fish possible to survive healthly...... i had a 14in bass in it a couple years back but it seemed extremely stressed so i let it go so im figure it would have to be under that size but i could be wrong. food is not an issue cause i have access to a private stream with tons of bait in it. i would be able to catch pretty much anysize pickerel. it would only be a couple of months because im going of to college but any info would be helpfull i have all the filters and stuff needed............do i need to have any tank mates for it or can i have it by itself plz all info on the topic would be great

What are your plans for the fish after a couple of months? Depending on where you are at, chain pickerel are considered game fish and need to meet size requirements as well.

well i was planning on releasing it again and they are not considered game fish in all states but regardless mass does have regs on them there are all kinds of loopholes around it a enviromental cop told me about when there got on private land so size is not a issue and i have no intention on hurting the fish if i feel its getting to stressed or whatever i will release it as soon as possible

NEVER rerelease fish back into the wild if you want a pickerel get a grass or a redfin you could even keep them in a 80 forever with say some less agressive dither fish like perch or some large chub.

The nanfa is against releasing captive fish. You could spread diseases ect ect. I think youy should get a fish you can either bring with you or that your parents will take care of while you aren't home/

yeah i can see ur point about releasing it prob shouldnt do that. but the problem with keeping it is my dog. when i had the bass my dad was so fascinated with it that he would almost ignore my dog. so when i would come home after school i would see my 110 pound rottwieller stalking the bass and i was always nervous that the dog would charge the tank and break everything hurting my dog and killing the fish but i always could bring it to my dorm room because i just found out in like the last couple min im rooming with a buddy of mine.....only problem with that is getting the fish to florida...since im driving my stuff down do u think if i got enough of those little disk things that release air bubbles that u put in live wells the fish would make the twenty four hour drive?????????????????????????????? plz all info will be appriciated..............i would still like to know even if it was hypotheticall how big of a fish would survive healthy under normall condition

Take my advice with caution as I'm totally uneducated on this.

Get a smaller pickerel. Keep it till it's like 3-5 inches, Then when your ready to go down to college pack your stuff up and pack it in a cooler snugly without any ice or coolant in a breather bag. Close the lid and try to avoid bouncing the car around. Or you could just get an watertight cooler and make him a temporary home for the car ride. try to find a battery opperated pump. Either way might give the fish too much stress and it may die. On the safest side I would just buy a fish once you get to florida.
