Recent reports of the death of my mudpuppy have been greatly exaggerated! I took all the stuff out of my 75 and I found the mudpuppy, he had evidently made himself a home in my cypress tree root ball and was responsible for the slow decline in the fish population in the tank.

I liked him better when he was active all the time but he is still cool!

He is probably 9 or 10 inches, hard to measure something that slippery and wiggly, I wish I knew what sex he was, breeding them would be very cool!

Off track here, but can you post a photo of that cypress and talk about how you get it to grow in a tank? Sounds like a very cool project that I'd love to tackle. Thanks.

I grow cypress with out soil, I force them to grow low across the top of the tank, limbs out of the water but under my lights. I used to grow cypress as bonsai and just used those techniques to shape the tree. It's about six years old now...

Heck, just thought it was a root ball, had not even considered that it was living. Neat

A power surge that occurred during Hurricane Matthew killed my aquarium lights, along with some other appliances so I may have to take the tank down and put the cypress tree back outside in a pond. When I get it set back up I'll try to take some pictures.

What kind of mudpuppy ... N. punctatus ? If so, that's a mighty big one.

I think it's Necturus maculosus.

At 10 inches it is no puppy, it is a full fledged "water dog"!
