The doodette and I are possibly making a trip to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque Ia. I've never been there but they seem to have a nice assortment of Mississippi river fishes. Anyone ever been there that can tell me if it is worth a long drive? I figure we will hit the american pickers store while we are in the area.

I had a great time when I was there a few years ago, I strongly recommend it.

The one in MO. has alligator gar that are the real deal. Never seen them that size at any aquarium I have been to. It is like a public aquarium, but for free, if you can escape purchasing something.

Matt it sounds like I need to plan a trip to BPS in Mo as well. Thats not to far a drive for me really. And no I probably wont make it out without buying something, I never do anyway.

Really- 6 foot plus gar. 150 pounds as a guess. A lot of other fish as well. I guess it is the original store. Much larger store than the satellite locations.

The aquarium in Dubuque is excellent. Tons of fishes, including bigger gar than any store aquarium can hold (at least any that I've been to). Great museum. My kids go there every time we visit the grandparents near Dubuque, and year after year, having seen everything, they never get tired of it.

Here's a video I shot there 8 or 9 years ago: https://youtu.be/iuVh2BWmUoQ

It has grown since then. They have added more exhibits, more tanks (including some saltwater stuff that's pretty cool), etc.

Lots of good stuff about the history of the river, too, and not just the Iowa part of it--the whole thing.

GO. (And while you're there, if you like pizza, eat at Marco's. Might want to make a reservation. Get the hot italian sausage--it's homemade.)
