I've figured out that the air bubbler is splashing water out of the tank.  the tank is a typical glass aquarium with the plastic frame.  i have a hood with light over it but still get water to splash out near the air bubbler.  when i removed the cover i was able to see it.  it kind of reminded me of how carbonated drinks have little water droplets splash.  i was wondering if everyone has this problem or a way to prevent it?

Even the smallest of bubbles pop when they reach the surface and spray the rim of the tank and the lid.  Over time, the droplets on the underside of the lid will get larger and larger.  If you're tank isn't level, the droplets will run to the edge and flow down the side of the tank.  Couple easy options; reduce the air flow.  OR, add a different air stone that produces finer bubbles.  OR, lower the water level.  OR, move where the bubbles come up....for instance have the bubbles come up in the middle of the tank, as opposed to a wall or corner.

I guess I'm not understanding how the water is still spilling out of the tank?  Most lids are recessed inside the lip of the tank rim and any water that forms drops on the lid would drip back into the tank.

thanks for your help.  for some reason event though the hood is on the inside lip it still splashes out.  i've been trying a few things and found that the black trim was not fully caulked.  i corrected this and i also had to add an additional strip of plastic on the back to cover the clearance hole on the hood, i'm assuming for a heater or air hose.  Water is a pesky thing and found i still had very little water getting out so i ended up floating a very small thin piece of styrofoam above so the bubbles roll off the sides vs "jumping out of the water and then popping.  I think i have the issue solved...thanks for your help.

If you buy a "frostee" at a convenience store, they usually come with a clear plastic dome top. If your bubbler is a simple bubble-stone at the end of a (near) vertical airline, it would be easy to modify the dome top to be an almost invisible shield that contains the spray from bubbles popping at the surface. A clear plastic cup would also work, if you want to save the cost of the frostee.
