Invasive gold fish?

Is anyone familiar with this?

It seems counter intuitive that gold fish could take over a lake with predators with out some special circumstances.

 

I know goldfish do not belong in the wild but taking over a lake seems a bit extreme for goldfish...

Read about that last year. Shortly after that article was written a flock of pelicans arrived and took out the entire goldfish population. Problem solved.

Seems to me a largemouth bass stocking or a few flatheads would have done the same thing.

There is a lake in the heart of Minneapolis (Powderhorn Lake) that has supported a goldfish population for years despite the presence of fish-eating birds, including cormorants and herons. (I've never seen pelicans there, though.) The odd thing is you usually never see the goldfish any other time of the year, and they do not come feed at the surface when people feed the many, many bullheads and ducks.

Here's a photo I took this past spring (I turned up the color saturation to better show the fish):

There were even more that I was unable to fit into the frame. Probably twice as many.
