Hi, I am conducting stream surveys for a class project and had one fish that I could not ID.  The fish was caught in a small stream and looks like some kind of shiner to me.  It was ~12cm long. Thank you for your help.

Biodude - Can you share the location (state, nearest city, watershed, etc.) of the collecting site? Thanks.

The fish was caught in Rocky Fork creek in the Paisa Creek watershed near Alton, Illinois.  And now that you mention it, it does look like a juvenile grass carp.

1st photo looks like a golden shiner.  Is the 2nd a different fish?
