Hello everyone. First post here. I have been thinking about this for awhile and finally decided to ask for help. Over the summer we visited my girlfriends mother. She lives along a river. Location is East China Michigan in the Belle River. We were sitting by the dock and noticed some small fish up on along the shore. Probably about an 1-1 1/2 inches. Colors were bright red and had blue. I have never seen this before. Almost looked like neon tetra in a way but could not get close enough or even trap one so I could get a picture. If anyone has any ideas I would very much appreciate it.

Here is a list of species that should be found in the area: http://fishmap.org/w...ml?huc=04090001

Can you describe the habitat and body shape of the fish a bit more?

Based on that list that Yeahson provided, it seems like it could have been an Iowa Darter or Rainbow Darter.  At least if you really saw bring red and blue.

When you say "almost looked like a neon tetra in a way" ... does that mean they were swimming or schooling around like regular fish?

'Cuz the darters that Michael suggested would primarily be sitting on the bottom, then scooting around a bit, then sitting, etc. They don't get up into the water column much.

Given that this was back in the summertime, based on Yeahson's Fishmap list they could possibly could be common or rosyface shiners. Those get red coloring and, at least in some photos/under some lighting conditions, have a blue cast to them.

This is going to be a very tenuous ID ... if any ... there's not much info to go on here!

Sorry all have been very busy with the holidays. Yes they were swimming around and schooling. They were in about an inch deep of water along the shore. There were some aquatic plants that the name escapes but they looked like some type of aponogeton that shoot small leaves to the top. Sorry I don't have much more info. I will be going back during the summer and hopefully bring a trap.
