I moved to Fairfax, VA recently and would like to know some friends in and around here. I haven't started any native aquarium now and hope to find some people to explore this region and could start a native aquarium this year.

Besides, I come from China, and could share some information about native fish of China. Also, I stayed in the Ozarks in Southwest Missouri for several years and have some experience of the native fish there too.

Thank you!

Hey Young, I'm in Centreville, a few miles down 66 from you. I don't do much local collecting as I'm somewhat of a darter snob and usually head to the western portions of the state to get the good stuff.

I've been meaning to get with MtFallsTodd as he has a great population introduced Rainbow darters out his way. Otherwise you're really only going to get Greensides, Fantails, and Tessellated darters in the immediate Nova/Fairfax areas. The diversity of shiners is small and the ones here are your typical silvery fish. Again, my taste for the species of shiners from the west makes me shun the local ones. But they are all still cool fish and we're all here because of our passion for natives.

I'm really into the aquarium industry so feel free to PM me if you want to discuss fish in general/local fish.

Hi, glad to meet you here. Winchester is nor far from the mountains, right? There must be a higher diversity of fish there. Have you ever explored the rivers or creeks there?

Hi littlen, I am glad to see your post. Centreville is  only about 15 to 20 minutes from my house. I'm in the west part of Fairfax City. I have noticed that diversity of fish species is not that good around here, especially comparing with the Ozarks in southwest Missouri where I stayed. However, I am still willing to know some locals and explore our creeks. Talking about darters, I have collected rainbow, Ozark, Orangethroat, Yoke, Banded fantail as well as Missouri Saddled darters in and around Springfield, Missouri. There are also several cool and unique species of the minnows family there too. Talking back to Virginia, I assume that it must be more diverse if we go west to the mountains. I just hope I can make a tripe when it's warmer this year.

I am not that familiar with the aquarium industry as well as tropical fish. However, I have a small aquarium with same barbs and other tropical and subtropical fish mainly from Asia. They are the most common species, but still make me happy. Also, I have collected native fish in China too. You may have reviewed the topic I posted about Chinese native fish in my hometown. My passion is learning about native fish of wherever I stay.

Thank you! I feel in the same way, I was only attracted by those colorful species before, but now, I like any of the fish species that I can find around me, as long as they are native.
