Carolina darters are pretty common in Union County

Could be either one of those, but I'd lean toward Carolina darter based on head shape and general chunkiness compared to swamp darter. Matt K what say you?

I suppose it could be a Carolina, but I still think it's a swamp. What type of habitat did it come from?

It was in the still/slow water of a creek, under a dead tree limb and a few leafs.

It looks like both a Swamp and Carolina to me. I have never caught a Swamp in Union County though, so l would lean towards Carolina Darter.

Hahah....It would take a lot more than that to discourage me. I really enjoy the treasure hunt.Don't let any comments/observations about your photography discourage you. We're a fun group here, but we are not shy about pointing out how helpful clear photos are for ids. When we're feeling really cheeky, you get ids like Bluricuss whyjapostis and Nofoci drownfelinus. It's all good.
