I've never had luck with store bought bettas. I think they're practically all weak stock to begin with. Hobby raised though are different, but I haven't had much of a chance to play with those. I'd say play with plants for awhile, maybe grow and sell some to help convince the parents that there are practical reasons for a tank. Worked for mine.

Well I have my tank back and I have approval to keep fish. It’s a 10 gallon looking like a stream, that will (hopefully) have some sticklebacks, right now it has 12 ghost shrimp. If I can’t get sticklebacks maybe I’ll wait for spring and collect some critters from our local stream.d430194f6c95fc3cc268191777202a0b.jpg fff6e1fde78010eadcf7d57224c5d36a.jpg1609702043487359577aa38c4b9c69f1.jpg

Dude, that tank looks beautiful! Hard to believe that's a 10 gallon!

Thanks! I’m thinking of buying a scoop or two of minnows and hoping there are some dace in the minnows and using them or get white clouds for the time being and then collecting some fish when it gets warmer

Thanks! Idk if I should get some dwarf hair grass or dwarf sag to complete the “stream” style

That is a pretty tank.  Stark, in a beautiful way.  If that's Java moss there, though, you'll have greenery aplenty soon enough!

It’s Christmas moss, I added some accent stones and re arranged the moss. Still might do elodea or maybe some tuffs of dwarf hairgrass

Got approval to buy fish online when it gets warmer! So I’m rescaping the tank to make it more “stream” like. Hoping for a trio of rainbows, maybe another riffel darter species and possibly a small school of minnows. Will more than likely order from jonahsaquariumd47838e80f47690e8ab3191d8ab005db.jpg152752d54cf0d1809f084d56926eb944.jpg

I got “free” mudminnows! (roughly .40¢ per minnow) IMG_5598.jpg 823fd380137d9a71e9555ea3f41dbe1f.jpg

Awesome. Great fish. I am truly surprised that they aren't more popular. Get them some gammarus and enjoy your micro pike.

My goal for this summer is to set up a 5 gallon bucket to culture some! They LOVE ghost shrimp but don’t eat my 1” white clouds

It’s not a great night for my tank, I put the minnows in a breeder box to see if captain would attack them and I came home to 3 floaters and one 1/2 dead IMG_5604.jpg

Go figure. Normally they are pretty difficult to kill. I took that for granted myself once and collected a bunch of mud minnows and hornwort. Put it and them in a bucket for a half hour ride. Bad news when I got home. Nothing but hornwort left. Still don't really know exactly what happened. Had to be oxygen. I suspect that is what happened here as well. Nervous fish, high consumption and not enough circulation. I am bummed for you. You aren't alone though.

I think the temp and pH are what killed them, today I try and get one more for a trio and then SLOWLY drip aclimate

Temp is possible, but that goes back to oxygen. I wouldn't put them in that box again. I hope you have better luck this time around.

Mudminnows can breath air if you give them access to the surface... agree with MDLV, dont put them in that box again.

Okay, I might just get a single one, unless I could have 5 in a 10 gallon for 5 months?
