The Spotted Sunfish, Lepomis punctatus.
AKA Solar eclipseyi.
Oddly they were not nesting the typical saucer shape i see with other sunfish occupy. The males had merely fanned out the silt from a spot cluttered with sticks and twigs. But they defended it with as much ferocity as a little beast can muster.

In south georgia we call'em 'Stumpknockers' in part for their frequent association with woody slackwater. I didn't know about their nest building, but love your faux latin recognizing that blue eye glow that is distinctive to these and redspotted sunfish.

Does the blue crescent have some function in visual acuity, or is it just "color" for species/sex recognition?
