I've had my house for 7 years now, and have long considered installing a pond in my backyard. I'm a big native plant guy, so the main focus would be creating habitat for insects, birds and native plants. (And any amphibians that are brave enough to deal with my dogs.)
I also like the idea of adding a small number of native fish, like banded killies, mud minnows and perhaps sticklebacks.
I'd like to be as natural as possible, and have read a lot online about building liner-free ponds using clay or bentonite to seal the pond. I also plan not to have any mechanical filtration.
I do plan to call my local university extension office for a soil analysis this spring.
I'm wondering: Do any of you have experience with this? Advice?
Thanks!

my pond has straight sides to keep predators out, don't think you can do that with bentonite
