So by the shallows in a pond I saw a leech. I usually hate leeches, but it's behavior was very interesting. I kind of wondered if it would be possible to somehow start a leech colony.

The small leeches that often are found in blackworm colonies usually multiply in (gravel) substrate in home aquaria.  I have seen numerous leeches (50+) show up on the bottom when pellets/algae wafers were introduced.  Never seemed to be a problem, but you only saw them once food was introduced.  *Unlike the blackworms which hang out 1/3 of the way like shag carpeting during the day as long as nothing has disturbed them.

So the short answer, is yes.  But the little ones I'm referring to would be kind of boring.

Some species are blood-feeders on vertebrate hosts; others prey on inverts, like the little gray "blackworm leeches".
