Caught this darter about a week ago in a small tributary to the Scioto River just south of Columbus OH. I am fairly confident in what this guy is but it was an interesting catch so I wanted to share it and see what some others think it is...

"zonalioides" ???  OK, maybe just a goofy colored greenside.  The narrow bars made me think he might have some zonale in his past.

Gerald nailed it! This is only the second one of these I have ever seen and I have caught literally thousands of both parent species in Ohio. Green side characters include the eye position elongate body and it does have a little of the W shaped marks near the tail along the sides. On the other hand it has zonale characters of the bands comming all the way forward along the sides, the position of the dark blotches along the back match up, and the color of the bands is more similar to a banded. This is not an April fools joke either, not an edited photo just an odd hybrid that doesn't happen often. I don't have the editing skills of Isaac to create a hybrid like he did a couple years ago.

That is too cool Brian. I've only seen two hybrid darters and have only managed a decent photo of one of them. Very fascinating, and great shot! Thanks for sharing!
