As far as I'm concerned, this fish is second only to Brook Trout as far as beautiful North American fish go. (That I have seen in person...) If these things came from South America and not South Carolina, people'd be paying five bucks a pop for 'em in the lfs.

This was the same fish, but many were lookin' this good. And these pics only hint at the depth and brilliance of their colors.

That fish is quite sharp. Lots of fish in the lfs aren't as nice.

In the 1930's William Innes wrote about how sailfin shiners were often used to prank those covetous aquarists who always had to have the latest and greatest new imports.  See page 231 in Exotic Aquarium Fishes.

Totally agree with you Matt! Lowland shiners are often seen as the ugly step sister of the Ptero clan. But I think they hold their own just fine.

Looks like I have a little online snooping to do as I don't have that book...

If these are the ugly step-sisters then who are the Cinderellas? These guys seem to have such a balance of paradoxically subtle flash and understated swimming strength...

Nice fish Matt, I have only found Lowland's once, also where I found Ironcolor Shiners.

Totally agree about the lowlands Matt.  The purple and orange and green and black are spectacular in a breeding colored adult.  Chip used to have a tank full of them and they were mesmerizing in a tank.  The males  spent most of their time flaring and waggling at other males.  If/when I finally set up a natives only tank, it will be set up around them.

Also agree about the under appreciation of NA natives.  These fish look similar to the Poeciliocharax tetras of SA that are some of my favorites from there as well.

How good looking could a fish named after an aging heavy metal band be?

Would never have expected that the man doing the 75 gallon stream build and oyster cultch biome as being a Metallica fan. Mind blown, head banged...

   I managed to get almost an hour in to try out my new net in search of a good blenny spot, dipnetting with Master of Puppets tunes in my head!

I know the feeling. Sometimes I'll be out there swinging the dipnet and pulling the seine and I'll have John Denver absolutely pine-needle-junkying his was through my head. Pretty intense!

What? Whaddya mean it's not the same?
