Awesome, good to hear someone has seen them breed. I have always wondered if they scattered or made nests...

Yep, those are bluespots which are beautiful fish.  Congrats on spawning them.  The search for me continues...

To sort of prove the egg scattering of bluespots, mine are still laying eggs in the artificial habitat. They are scattered throughout, no system, not in the substrate. Male stays nearby but no fanning the eggs or aggressive protection like most sunfish. The most recent batch hatched today. Attached should be a picture of the newly hatched fry in the habitat. They will eventually start to hop off and float around the tank until they latch onto the side of the tank or other artificial habitat.

Look closely...they are attached where they were attached as eggs.

Somebody has got to film this stuff.  I have seen crappie place eggs in a surface like that even though they are nor generally classified as egg scatterers.

Find ways for people not already interested in natives to value them.

If I can find some spare time, I will see what I can do. I haven't even had time to go through my Missouri pics yet...

My question is unrelated to the spawning.

Where did you catch the obesus in SC?  I have made literally thousands of collections in SC, admittedly not often in areas appropriate for obesus, and have yet to get one here.  I have caught them in NC, GA and FL but not here.  I have seen so many blackbandeds and bluespotteds over the years that I can't get over the lack of bandeds.  Heck, I have caught more than 100 mud sunfish but no obesus.  I am apparently afflicted with the Matt Knepley obesus curse. Any guidance would be appreciated.

HEY!!! Ima gonna put a right proper hex on you if you don't start bein' nice!

I can't help it if you know where the fish "should" be. :P

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments. The fry are big enough to eat BS nauplii which is quite entertaining to watch.
