I am located in northeast PA and I have a 75 gallon tank I set up in January with local plants and I let cycle over the winter with some minnows from a local bait store. The water parameters are all good - Ammonia and nitrites are zero, Nitrates are low. I gave the minnows back to the bait store (We are only putting in fish we catch in a local lake) and just put 2 small (about 1 1/2") pumpkinseeds I caught in a minnow net in the tank. My question is are there any tips on getting them to take flake and other dried foods. I bought flake and pellets for ciclids and so far they are ignoring them. They are in the tank for 3 days now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone is familiar with this part of the country are there any suggestions on tank mates.

For feeding my sunfish I did this:
I caught my sunfish over spring break and I had him in a 2.5 gallon until I could afford a larger tank (he was like 1" long, He wouldn't take flake food when I first got him, but he would eat pieces of worm. Eventually when I would walk in I would shake the flake can in front of the bowl and then feed him his worm. After a few days of doing this he started associating me/the can shake with food. I just threw in some flakes a few days later and he ate them.'
Tankmates: Other sunfish or a yellow perch are probably the ideal tankmates for him. Sunfish are still predators and will eat smaller fish, but will be bullied by a larger more agressive predator. I would say go for more pumpkinseeds, or a longear, a yellow perch, or even a green sunfish.

Pumpkinseeds (like redear sunfish and green side darters) may require some snails to supplement their diets.
